Geriatrics is a medical discipline that examines diseases associated with ageing and the relevant disabling consequences. The main aim to delay functional and cognitive decline, while maintaining self-sufficiency and the best possible quality of life.
A geriatrician has specialist knowledge of the biological, social and psychological processes regarding ageing that greatly affect health and may cause disease outbreaks that related to old age. Geriatricians also focus on many aspects of the patient’s life, such as social and psychological aspects of aging, which are often closely related to health problems that frequently affect older adults.
The care pathway for the elderly is based on a multidimensional geriatric assessment that evaluates the biological, psychological and social factors that influence an elderly person’s health and wellbeing. It is important to keep in mind that the main objective is to preserve the patient’s self-sufficiency and the best possible quality of life. The ultimate therapeutic goal is the recovery of clinical stability and functional autonomy of the patient.
