Physiatry is a globally practiced medical discipline also referred to as physical medicine and rehabilitation.
The physiatrist is a doctor who has graduated in medicine and surgery, specialised in physical medicine and rehabilitation, has experience in treating disabilities caused by various pathological conditions and/or pain, and has expertise in the neuromuscular, osteoarticular and biomechanical-ergonomic field.
A physiatrist can assess and treat injuries relating to a person’s reduction of autonomy with respect to his/her physical, family, work and social environment. The doctor’s objective is to maximize the patient’s functions and quality of life by collaborating with an interdisciplinary team and other rehabilitation therapists.
His/Her field of interest is the treatment of musculoskeletal and nervous system diseases that involve anatomical or functional deficits and/or loss of a person’s autonomy (e.g. rachialgia, scoliosis, and post-traumatic and fracture effects, brain stroke, etc.).
The physiatrist, after assessing the person’s rehabilitative needs, he prescribes the correct medical rehabilitative procedure (Individual Rehabilitation Plan and its respective rehabilitation programs) and the amount, frequency and duration of the physical, medical and rehabilitation services.
The physiatrist executes his tasks by following the route diagnosis – evaluation – therapy (medical, manual and rehabilitative).
The interdisciplinary nature of physical medicine is perhaps the most characteristic aspect of a physiatrist’s work. The fundamental principle to every medical rehabilitative treatment is diagnosis, which must be made according to the following standard criteria:
