Haematology is a branch of internal medicine that deals with the hematopoietic system that is composed of blood and body organs (bone marrow, spleen and lymph nodes). The haematologist is the doctor that studies the causes, diagnosis, treatment, prognosis and prevention of blood-related disorders. The study of blood-related disorders is closely related to the study of benign disorders (anaemia) and malignant diseases such as leukaemia and lymphoma.
Haematology is also concerned with the study of red blood cell diseases and iron metabolism disorder (anaemia and polycythemia), blood clotting disorders such as haemophilia and purpura, haemoglobin defects (hemoglobinopathies) and with the study of bone marrow and bone marrow transplants.
