Dermatology is the branch of medicine that deals with skin and related tissues (hair, nails, sweat glands, etc.).
The skin is the largest organ of the body and obviously the most visible one. Although some dermatological disorders affect only the skin, many others are indicators of systemic disorders, or rather that affect different body organs or tissues. Consequently, the dermatologist’s training includes the knowledge of all different diseases that may produce signs and symptoms on the skin as well as the study of genetics that is gradually gaining greater importance.
It has been proven that there are connections between skin conditions (acne, alopecia, psoriasis, dermatitis, etc.) and emotional aspects and/or stress conditions. Venereology was historically developed and associated with the branch of dermatology and it concerns the diagnosis and treating sexually transmitted diseases.
Dermatology includes many medical and surgical aspects such as, for example, the surgical treatment of skin cancers, laser surgery, photodynamic therapy, beauty treatments based on the use of botulinum toxin and fillers with hyaluronic acid (filler), sclerotherapy, liposuction and chemical peeling.
